Continuing series of lectures on Art and Activism, we are offering a talk by Estonian curator, art critic and educator Airi Triisberg “The entanglements of alter-globalisation movement and contemporary art in the Baltic region”.
In the 2000s, the alter-globalisation movement made use of creative forms of protest, transgressing the boundaries between contemporary art and activism. The toolbox of the alter-globalisation movement included, for example, interventions in public space, culture jamming and adbusting, tactical frivolity and carnivalesque forms of direct action. How are the entanglements between contemporary art and movement politics manifested in the Baltic region? This presentation will analyse three relevant examples: Pro-test Lab in Vilnius initiated by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas in 2005, queer-feminist festival LadyFest Tallinn (2011–2018) and Freedom Poster by Flo Kasearu, Andra Aaloe, Tanel Rannala and Juhan Teppart (2008).
Airi Triisberg is an independent curator, writer and educator based in Tallinn. She is interested in issues related to gender and sexualities, illness/health and dis/abilities, social movement politics, self-organisation and collective care practices, struggles against precarious working conditions in the art field and beyond. Her practice is often located at the intersection of political education, self-organisation and knowledge production. In 2015 she curated Get Well Soon!, an exhibition presenting artistic re-articulations of social imaginaries rooted in the radical movements of the 1970s. In 2010-2012 she was an active member in the art workers movement in Tallinn. In 2015 she co-published the book Art Workers – Material Conditions and Labour Struggles in Contemporary Art Practice together with Minna Henriksson and Erik Krikortz. Currently she is researching political cultural practices in Eastern Europe.

The lecture will be in English. Participation is free of charge.
