Tim Sullivan :: What to do with the Romantics?

Trešdien, 30. septembrī, plkst. 18.30 ISSP telpās notiks pasākums “Ko iesākt ar romantiķiem?” – ISSP Rīgas rezidences mākslinieka un fotogrāfijas pasniedzēja Tima Salivana (Tim Sullivan, Lielbritānija) lekcija un pārdomas par fotogrāfijas lasīšanu un romantisma mantojuma noderīgumu mūsdienu attēlu veidotājiem.

Pasākums notiks angļu valodā, ieeja – bez maksas.

On Wednesday, September 30, at 6.30 PM an event “What to do with the Romantics?” – a talk about the usefulness of Romanticism for the present-day image-makers and a meeting with ISSP Riga Residency artist and lecturer Tim Sullivan (UK) – will take place at the ISSP.

The event will take place in English, free entrance.

Tims Salivans ir fotogrāfs, mākslinieks un pasniedzējs. Ieguvis maģistra grādu fotogrāfijā Karaliskajā Mākslas koledžā un bakalaura grādu Vestminsteres Universitātē, šobrīd viņš turpina studijas doktorantūrā. Viņa pētniecības fokusā ir estētiskās domas nozīmība attēlu pieredzēšanā, kas potenciāli paver jaunus ceļus pasaules izprašanai.

László Moholy-Nagy, a key photographer, designer, writer and artist of the Bauhaus is often quoted in photography classes, and the above quote is perhaps his most used to encourage students of photography to think about the importance of reading images critically and to become active agents and producers, as opposed to passive consumers of images.
But what about reading images poetically? Is there room for this in our current climate of crisis? The art of the Romantic period is associated with poetry, subjectivity and nature. Its effect on our modern conception of art has been strong, but often problematic and heavily criticized in relation to photographic work.

Tim Sullivan is a freelance photographer, artist, and lecturer. He has a MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, and a BA 1st Hons from the University of Westminster. Currently, he is researching for his PhD, its focus is on the importance of aesthetic thought– with regards to the experience of images as a means to potentially bring about new encounters and new ways of making sense of the world.
