Julia Volonts :: When Words Are Not Enough: Art as a Therapeutic Tool for Community Engagement

Trešdien, 16. septembrī, plkst. 18.30 ISSP telpās notiks pasākums “Kad ar vārdiem nepietiek: māksla kā terapeitisks rīks kopienas iesaistei” – tikšanās ar mākslas terapeiti Džūliju Volonts (Julia Volonts, ASV). Vakara gaitā norisināsies Džūlijas Volonts darbu prezentācija un saruna par mākslas terapiju, viņas pieredzi Rīgā un Latvijā, un to, kā māksla var kļūt par terapeitisku rīku kopienas iesaistīšanai un emancipācijai.

Pasākums notiks angļu valodā, ieeja – bez maksas.

On Wednesday, September 16, at 6.30 PM an event “When Words Are Not Enough: Art as a Therapeutic Tool for Community Engagement” – a meeting with art therapist Julia Volonts (USA) will take place at the ISSP. Drawing from her work in Latvia as an American art therapist, Julia will present her personal work and discuss the topic of art therapy, her experience in Riga, and how art can be used as a therapeutic tool for community engagement and empowerment.

The event will take place in English, free entrance.

Džūlija Volonts ir sertificēta mākslas terapeite no Ņujorkas. Ieguvusi Maģistra grādu profesionālās mākslas terapijas studijās Ņujorkas Vizuālās mākslas skolā, viņai ir pieredze darbā gan izglītības, gan sabiedriskajā un privātajā sektorā. 2019. gadā Džūlija ieguva Fulbraita stipendiju, lai attīstītu pētniecību par posttraumatisku stresu saistītu ar starppaaudžu traumām Latvijā. Viņa lasa vieslekcijas Rīgas Stradiņa universitātē un vada mākslas terapijas nodarbības un grupas Resursu centrā sievietēm “Marta”. Džūlija ir bijusi Ņujorkas Mākslas terapijas biedrības valdē un piedalījusies vairākās mākslas terapijas izstādēs Ņujorkā. Pašlaik viņa strādā attālināti kā mākslas terapeits, attīsta jaunus projektus Latvijā un turpina veidot mākslā balstītas darbnīcas dažādām grupām.

Julia Volonts is a Licensed and Board Certified Art Therapist from New York. She holds a Master of Professional Studies in Art Therapy from the NY School of Visual Arts. Her clinical experience is within educational, community, and private practice settings. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2019 to conduct research on post-traumatic stress associated with trans-generational trauma in Latvia, where she now resides. She is also guest lecturing at Riga Stradins University and providing art therapy services at Centre for women's rights "Marta". Julia served on the board of the New York Art Therapy Association and collaborated on several art therapy exhibitions in New York. She currently works as a remote art therapist, is developing new projects in Latvia, and continues to present art-based workshops for different audiences.

ISSP invites all interested in Black and White analogue process and looking for lab facilities to become 2011 members of our BW Lab in Andrejsala (Riga). ISSP Exhibition “Reference point” in Riga

A short video-documentation of ISSP 2010 exhibition “Reference Point” currently on show at Goethe Institute in Riga is available on vimeo! For those who still have not seen it, the exhibition  will be on show till January 30.

And, btw, as of January 2011 the ISSP 2010 catalogues and the complete collection of 2006 - 2010 catalogues can be purchased at the Latvian Museum of Photography (you can also take a look at them for free at kim? reading room, Satori, META cafe, Istaba and couple of other places).

Greetings from Ludza - ISSP 2010 Exhibition

The ISSP 2010 Exhibition was festively opened on 7 August 2010. Visitors are welcome to view the entire collection of artistic projects of 65 participants in Ludza till 2 October 2010.

ISSP evening programme open to visitors

The ISSP Evening Programme at Ezersala boarding school (Ludza district) from 1st till 7th August will be traditionally open for interested visitors and guests! Detailed programme in English here.

Aaron Shuman in Riga (second try)

We all try again and are looking forward to host Aaron Shuman in Riga this weekend, provided no more volcano surprises coming up. The lecture “Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs” will take place at kim? at 19:00 on Saturday 1 May 2010.

The workshop Aesthetics of nostalgia will run this weekend, 1-2 May. You are welcome to apply for several vacant places till this Friday, 30 April!

In framework of US culture month in Riga “Made in USA“, we are pleased to invite applications to an ISSP-run workshop Aesthetics of nostalgia by a great photographer, editor, writer and curator Aaron Shuman. The workshop shall take place on 17-18 April 2010, at kim? Riga.
