Every evening starting from Sunday, 4 August, till Friday, 9 August, we will offer a series of fascinating presentations and artist talks by ISSP masters, participants and invited guests. On Saturday, the 10th, everyone is invited to the opening of the exhibition of ISSP final works at the new Kuldiga Arts Hall and the screening of participants' works at the open air Goldingen cinema
Traditionally, the ISSP evening programme is open to all photography lovers - free of charge!

Sunday 4 August

20:00 - 21:30 “Sources & Influences” - artist talk, Todd Hido (US)

Todd Hido is an American contemporary artist and photographer. Much of his work involves urban and suburban housing across the U.S., of which the artist produces large, highly detailed and luminous color photographs. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Boston,to name a few.
In the slide show Todd will show images of his work and talk about his process openly, plus discuss his own sources, influences, and kinships.  He will show other artists & images that inform his practice as an artist.

Monday 5 August

20:00 – 21.30 Part 1: “In Search of Lightning - Stories of Love and Loss” - artist talk, Esther Teichmann (DE/US/UK)

Esther Teichmann is a German–American artist and photographer. Teichmann’s  body of work uses still and moving image, collage and painting to create alternate worlds, which blur autobiography and fiction. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally, with group shows in Houston, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Mannheim and Modena and solo exhibitions in the UK, Australia, Germany and Switzerland.
In her talk, Esther will explore relationships between loss, desire and the imaginary, interweaving psychoanalysis, philosophy and fiction with her own work. 

21:30 – 23:00 Part 2: “The Beauty of the Photobook”- Teun van der Heijden (NL)

After studying at St. Joost Academy of Art and Design in Breda Teun van der Hejden started his career as graphic designer. His collaboration with the World Press Photo made him decide to change track and focus exclusively on photography projects - books and exhibitions.Now he has become one of the most in-demand names among photographers when it comes to design their books.

What forces lie behind our judgment of beauty in art and, more specifically, in the judgment of photobooks? Teun will focus on how technical shifts and changes in the field of photography influence the way we look at the photobook.

Tuesday 6 August

20:00 - 22:00 Artist talk - Yan Morvan (FR)

Yan Morvan is a pioneer of French photojournalism. Freelance photographer since 1988, he works with major international publications and has received international acclaim for his war and conflict reports. He has published numerous books - “Bikers&co”, “Liban”, “Gang”, “Mondosex”. His last book "Gangstory" a result of 20 years of work on the delinquent gangs of Parisian suburbs came out in November 2012 and was sold out in a whim.

Part I: “Gangs story - an attempt at urban anthropology”

Yan will show around 200 images from his 40-year long project on the gangs of Paris, explaining changes in the socio-political atmosphere within the gangs themselves and their portrayal by the press. The talk will also ask the question - who is the photojournalist, a witness of human drama or a voyeuristic accomplice of the media?

Wednesday 7 August

20:00 – 21:30 Part I: "Captured: Favorite Photo Stories from Russian Reporter Magazine" - Andrei Polikanov (RU)

Andrei Polikanov has worked in the field of photojournalism since the beginning of the 90ties - for 10 years as a photo editor for the TIME Magazine Moscow bureau, and since 2007 as director of photography at the Russian Reporter Magazine. Polikanov is a member of various national and international photo contest juries (World Press Photo, Visa d’Or in Perpignan and Interfoto Russia, among others), and a member of the Joop Swart Masterclass selection committee.

21:30 – 23:00Part II: Artist talk - Yuri Kozyrev (RU)

As a photojournalist for the past 25 years, Yuri Kozyrev has witnessed many world-changing events. Immediately after September 11 2001, he was on the scene in Afghanistan, where he documented the fall of the Taliban. He lived in Baghdad, Iraq between 2003 and 2009, photographing different sides of the conflict as a contract photographer for Time Magazine. Since the beginning of 2011, Yuri has been documenting the uprisings and their aftermaths in Bahrain, Yemen, Tunisia and especially Egypt and Libya. Yuri is a founding member of NOOR agency

Thursday 8 August

Contemporary Self-Portraits project

20:00 – 21:30 Part I: presentation of Contemporary Self Portraits project in Turku, Finland - Taina Erävaara (FI)

The Contemporary Self-Portraits Project focuses on individuals and local communities in four European regions: Finland (Turku), Estonia (Tallinn), Ireland (Dublin), Latvia (Riga) and Sweden (Umeå). The project aims to give local inhabitants a voice in expressing their personal and collective identity through self-portraits created at a series of assisted self-portrait workshops in and around the project locations. Taina is the head of the project in Turku and head of Fine Arts Department of the Arts Academy at the Turku University Applied Sciences. The artistic results of the project until now will be presented.

21:30 – 23:00 Part II: “12 Years After, a body of work revisited” – artist talk, Elina Brotherus (FI/FR)

Elina Brotherus works in photography and video, mainly in the genre of self-portraits. Her photographs investigate the relationship between an individual and the space surrounding him, how does one influence the other. Elina has had numerous solo and group shows since 1997, and has published four monographs, including, most recently, Artist and her model by Le Caillou bleu, Brussels, 2012.

NB! Guests are responsible for the entire logistics of their stay and should take care not to disturb the work of the ISSP workshops. Overnight accommodation is possible if you contact the organisers in advance.

All the evening talks take place at Pelči boarding school, Pelči, Kuldīga district.

ISSPPP X + X

No 6. līdz 28. decembrim ISSP Galerija pārtaps par improvizētu plakātu mākslas izstādi un gadatirgu “ISSPPP X + X”, piedāvājot aplūkot un iegādāties 20 īpaši izvēlētus Latvijas jauno fotogrāfu un ilustratoru darbus vienkāršā, gaumīgā un pieejamā formātā – plakātā. Projektā piedalās desmit fotogrāfi un desmit ilustratori. Atklāšanas pasākums notiks 6. decembrī plkst. 19.00.

From December 6 to 28, the ISSP Gallery will turn into an improvised poster art exhibition and fair “ISSPPP X + X”, offering to see and purchase 20 carefully selected affordable posters by ten young Latvian photographers and ten illustrators. The launch event will take place on December 6 at 19.00.

Trešdien, 13. novembrī, plkst. 18.30 ISSP Galerijā Berga bazārā notiks tikšanās ar šībrīža ISSP Rīgas Rezidences māksliniecēm Kleo Vehteri (Nīderlande) un Demelzu Vatsu (Lielbritānija). Interesentiem būs iespēja uzzināt par viņu līdzšinējo darbību, kā arī Rīgā topošajiem projektiem.

On November 13 at 6.30 PM a meeting with ISSP Riga Residency artists Cleo Wächter (the Netherlands) and Demelza Watts (the UK) will take place at the ISSP Gallery, Riga. The attendees will have a chance to hear about their previous work, as well as projects they are developing in Riga.

Bērnu un ģimeņu diena ISSP Galerijā

Līdz 27. novembrim ISSP Galerijā skatāma mākslinieces Evitas Gozes personālizstāde “Sardzē”. Tās pamatā ir piecu gadu garumā tapusi fotogrāfiju sērija, kurā autore caur Jaunsardzes kustības vērojumiem pievēršas pieaugšanas un vīrišķības tēmām. 16. novembrī ISSP aicina uz radošo darbnīcu bērniem un ģimenēm, kuras dalībniekiem būs iespēja doties iztēles pārgājienā ar jaunsargu!

Evita Goze – Sardzē / On Guard

No 18. oktobra līdz 27. novembrim ISSP Galerijā skatāma latviešu mākslinieces Evitas Gozes personālizstāde “Sardzē”. Tās pamatā ir piecu gadu garumā tapusi fotogrāfiju sērija, kurā autore caur Jaunsardzes kustības vērojumiem pievēršas pieaugšanas un vīrišķības tēmām.

From October 18 to November 27 the ISSP Gallery is hosting the solo exhibition “On Guard” by Latvian artist Evita Goze. It is based on a partly anthropological, partly staged five-year-long observation of the Youth Guard, exploring such themes as coming of age and masculinity.

Vienlaikus dalībnieki iepazīsies ar fotogrāfijas virzienu daudzveidību – no dokumentālās līdz mākslas fotogrāfijai, no mediju un reklāmu attēliem līdz sociālo tīklu selfijiem – un attīstīs vizuālo lasītprasmi, kas mūsdienās kļūst arvien svarīgāka. ISSP 2019 publication - "Photography and the World"

Created and launched in July during the ISSP 2019 in Zaļenieki, Latvia, this new publication draws together the content of the first thematic edition of the International Summer School of Photography, "Photography and the World", including the plentiful questions raised by the ISSP participants, tutors and guests, as well as some passionate attempts to look for the answers. Editorial team: Katherine Oktober Matthews (NL), Helen Korpak (FI), Nico Baumgarten (DE), Nicolas Polli (CH), Demelza Watts (UK), with contributions by the ISSP participants, tutors and guests.

The publication is now available as a free open source download as well as a very limited number of print copies.

Valley of the Strange :: Guided Tour and Discussion

15. augustā plkst. 18.30 aicinām iepazīties ar izstādes "Savādā ieleja" māksliniekiem un kuratoru. Vakaru ievadīs mākslinieku vadīta ekskursija izstādē, kam sekos kuratora piezīmes un diskusija. Sarunā autori pievērsīsies fotogrāfijas spējai pārvērtēt iemācīto un padarīt ikdienišķo svešādu, kā arī diskutēs par jauno mākslinieku iespējām un stratēģijām fotogrāfijas pasaulē. Visi aicināti iesaistīties un uzdot sev interesējošos jautājumus.

On August 15 at 6PM we are excited to host an opportunity to meet and engage with the international artists and curator for the exhibition "Valley of the Strange". The event will begin with an artist-led tour of the exhibition and opening remarks by the curator. The following panel discussion will touch upon photography’s power to un-learn, the uncanny valley, time and mortality, and navigating the art/photography world as a young artist. Anyone is welcome to take part and ask any questions that you may have.
