Kristians Brekte, Modris Svilāns

Izstāde "Solargrāfija" ir Latvijas senās sakrālās arhitektūras un apbedījuma vietu atspoguļojums analogā foto metodē. Šis ir mākslinieku Kristiana Brektes un Modra Svilāna ilggadēja projekta noslēguma punkts, kurā galerijas telpa pārtapusi par dark room jeb tumšo istabu, tādējādi solargrāfijas darbus skatītājiem atklājot pavisam intīmā veidā.

The Solargraphy exhibition is a reflection of Latvia's ancient sacral architecture and burial sites in the technique of analog photography. In this conclusion of a long-term project by artists Kristians Brekte and Modris Svilāns, the gallery space becomes a darkroom, thus revealing the works to the public in a very intimate way.

Mākslinieki Kristians Brekte un Modris Svilāns savā radošajā sadarbībā pievēršas un pēta visdažādākās cilvēka dzīves parādības, par tām reflektējot telpas objektos, skaņas un gaismas scenogrāfijā, kā arī analogajā fotogrāfijā. Vairāk kā piecu gadu garumā abi mākslinieki nodarbojušies ar solargrāfiju un iemūžinājuši Latvijas seno sakrālo arhitektūru un apbedījuma vietas. Interese par pamesto, nepareizo un tumšo dzīvošanas pusi, māksliniekus padarījusi par vietas pētniekiem, kur fotogrāfisks eksperiments ar vidi ir gan daļa no novērojuma, gan zināma veida secinājums. Ilgtermiņā sadarbojoties, Brekte un Svilāns nonākuši pie individuālo interešu kompromisa, radot psiholoģiski baisu vienojošo mākslas darbu estētiku.

Solargrāfiju paši mākslinieki definē kā “principu, kad ar saules stariem kadrā tiek iededzināts attēls”. Taču patiesībā tās attēlā nojaušams daudz vairāk – tā nav tikai mirkļa vai vietas fiksācija, bet gan vides un laika vizuāls tvērums. Ar pašizgatavotām pinhole kamerām Kristians Brekte un Modris Svilāns apceļojuši Latviju, kameras paslēpjot pie pamestām baznīcām un kapos, vietās, par kuru esamību cilvēki jau sen aizmirsuši. Kā mākslinieki viņi pievēršas attēlā iekļautajai formai, kompozīcijai un attēla rašanās procesam, savukārt kā pētnieki, viņi atgriežas tagadnes aizmirstajā telpā, protokolējot nebūtībā aizlaistos dzīvības pieminekļus.

Solargrāfija ir mākslas forma, kurai autori Latvijā līdz šim pievērsušies maz, līdz ar to, Brekti un Svilānu var uzskatīt par sava veida pionieriem šajā nozarē. Izstāde "Solargrāfija" ISSP galerijā ir šī ilggadējā projekta noslēgums, kurā solargrāfijas darbi skatītājiem atklāti pavisam intīmā veidā. Telpai pārtopot par dark room jeb tumšo istabu, ekspozīcijas centrā nonācis pats trauslākais analogā procesa elements - foto darba negatīvs, kuram izstādes norises laikā lemts mainīt savu vizuālo formu. Izstādi papildina arī mākslinieku radīta skaņas instalācija, kas radīta domājot par vientuļajām un cilvēkam svešajām Latvijas vietām.

KRISTIANS BREKTE (1981) vizuālajā valodā rodamas atsauces uz kultūras un mākslas vēsturi, reliģiju, seksualitāti. Sižetiskais vandālisms autora darbos mijas ar formas tīrību un tehnisku nostrādātību, asi kritiskās vai atkailinošās norādes un citātus vienojot jau atpazīstamību iemantojušā estētikā. Kristians Brekte absolvējis Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas scenogrāfijas apakšnozari. Šobrīd ir Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas asociētais profesors un Glezniecības katedras vadītājs. Par darbu sēriju “Rīgas madonnas” (2010) nominēts Purvīša balvai. Autora darbi no izstādes “Gastronoms” (2007) iekļauti britu izdevniecības Phaidon katalogā Younger Than Jesus (2009), kurā apkopoti spilgtākie jaunie mākslinieki no visas pasaules vecumā līdz 33 gadiem. 2014. gadā izdevniecībā “Neputns” tika izdots mākslinieka radošajai darbībai veltīts katalogs “Brekte” un 2016. gadā LNMM izstāžu zālē “Arsenāls” norisinājās Brektes līdz šim vērienīgākā izstāde ar nosaukumu “Arsenāls”.

MODRIS SVILĀNS (1979) savā radošajā praksē pievēršas skaņas un kustības pētniecībai, radot tehniski nostrādātus un konceptuāli daudzslāņainus kinētiskās mākslas darbus, kā arī aizraujas ar analogo fotogrāfiju. M. Svilāns absolvējis Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas Metāla dizaina apakšnozari, zstādēs piedalās kopš 2003. gada. 2012. gadā Arhitektu namā rīkojis kinētiskās mākslas objektiem un melnbaltajai fotogrāfijai veltītu personālizstādi "Inerce". Tandēmā ar K. Brekti sarīkojis vairākas nozīmīgas izstādes, tostarp “Lūk še, kā šeitan dzīvo!” (2018) Rīgas mākslas telpā, “HELIOS” (2018) Madonas novadpētniecības un mākslas muzejā un “ALL’ARM” (2020) Rīgas mākslas telpā.

Within their creative collaboration, artists Kristians Brekte and Modris Svilāns focus on and study various phenomena of human life, reflecting on them in the form of spatial objects, sound and light scenography, as well as analog photography. For more than five years, both artists have been engaged in solargraphy, documenting Latvia's ancient sacral architecture and burial sites. Their interest in the abandoned, deviant and darker sides of life has turned the artists into researchers of a place, in which photographic experiments with the environment are both part of an observation and a kind of conclusion. Through their long-term cooperation, Brekte and Svilāns have reached a compromise of individual interests, creating a unifying artistic aesthetic of the psychologically disturbing.

The artists themselves define solargraphy as "the principle of an image being burned into the frame by the sun's rays". In reality, such an image hints at much more – it is not just a fixation of a moment or a place, but a visual capture of an environment and time. Kristians Brekte and Modris Svilāns have traveled around Latvia with homemade pinhole cameras, hiding the cameras near abandoned churches and cemeteries; places whose existence has long been forgotten. As artists, they focus on the form, composition, and process of image formation, while as researchers, they return to the forgotten space of the present, recording monuments to life that have been neglected.

Solargraphy as an art form has not been overly developed in Latvia so far, therefore Brekte and Svilāns can be considered pioneers of the field. The Solargraphy exhibition at the ISSP Gallery is the conclusion of a long-term project, revealing the work to the public in a very intimate way. With the space transformed into a darkroom, the most fragile element of the analog process has come to the fore – the photo negative, destined to change its visual form during the exhibition. The exhibition is complemented by a sound installation created by the artists, with reference to lonely and unfamiliar places in Latvia.

The visual language of KRISTIANS BREKTE (1981) holds references to the history of culture and art, religion, sexuality. The vandalism of the subject matter in the artist’s work mixes with a purity of form and technical mastery, uniting sharply critical or revealing references and quotes within already familiar aesthetics. Kristians Brekte is a graduate of the Scenography Department of the Academy of Arts of Latvia. He is currently an associate professor at the Academy of Arts of Latvia and Head of the Department of Painting. Nominated for the Purvītis Prize for his series of works The Madonnas of Riga (2010). The artist’s works from the exhibition Gastronomy (2007) were included in the catalog Younger Than Jesus (2009) by the British publishing house Phaidon, which brought together the brightest international artists under the age of 33. In 2014, Neputns publishing house released Brekte, a catalogue dedicated to the artist’s work, and in 2016, Brekte's most ambitious exhibition to date entitled Arsenāls took place in the Arsenāls exhibition hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art.

In his creative practice, MODRIS SVILĀNS (1979) focuses on the study of sound and motion, creating technically developed and conceptually multi-layered works of kinetic art, and also has a passion for analogue photography. Svilāns graduated from the Metal Design Department of the Academy of Arts of Latvia and has been participating in exhibitions since 2003. In 2012, his solo exhibition Inertia at the House of Architects was dedicated to kinetic art objects and black-and-white photography. He has had several important exhibitions in tandem with K. Brekte, including This is How We Livin'! (2018) at the Riga Art Space, HELIOS (2018) at the Madona Museum of Local History and Art and ALL’ARM (2020) at the Riga Art Space.
