The applications for the ISSP 2019 will be open in the beginning of the 2019.
Who can apply?
The ISSP is designed for emerging photographers - young professionals (irrespective of age), artists working with photography, students of photography and art, and advanced amateurs with practical knowledge and a keen interest in photographic practice. You must have an active relationship with the medium of photography and a desire to bring it to a new level via an intense learning experience.
Workshop "Curating Photography" is open for professional or emerging curators working with photography.
Please make sure you fulfil the basic requirements:
- You have an active interest in photography as a medium of self-expression or chosen profession, and have engaged yourself in studying photography in a formal or informal education programme or by means of self-study;
- You have completed at least one long-term photographic project;
- You are proficient with the use of your camera and post-processing of your images (technical elements of photography are not a part of the curricula);
- You are able to understand and express yourself freely in English, the official language of the ISSP;
- You are at least 18 years old; there is no upper age limit for participation.
- NB! The participants must agree to adhere to the rules of ISSP;
- Bringing your own laptop for post-processing of the images is a near necessity;
Photographers of all backgrounds, interests and ages are encouraged to apply. ISSP participants come from over 30 countries of the world, 5 continents. We provide visa invitations to participants who need it, but you are responsible for all visa-related costs yourself.
Submit an electronic APPLICATION FORM including a small portfolio of images from your latest projects. Please also include your motivation for taking part in a specific workshop/s or Residency. Application deadline : 30 March 2018.
The results of the selection process will be communicated by mid-May.
The students must confirm their participation by payment of the advance participation fee within 5 days of notification.
ISSP 2018 participation fees, costs and subsidies
The ISSP is a non-commercial event, aimed to promote the development of emerging photographers in Latvia and the broader Eastern Europe region. The fees are kept as low as possible to allow the most talented participants to take part.
1. Full participation fee - 700 EUR
ISSP participation fee includes campus accommodation and full board (3 meals a day) for 8 days, as well as local transport in Kuldīga.
The participants are responsible for the costs of production and printing of their work, transport to the location (including visa-related costs if necessary) and incidental expenses during the workshop.
2. Subsidised participation fee - 350 EUR
ISSP is offering a limited number of fee subsidies for talented young photographers (and curators) from the Baltic countries and CIS who for objective reasons cannot afford to pay the full fee. In order to qualify for the fee subsidy you must be a national or permanent resident of one of the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Central Asian Republics. Those applying for a subsidy should provide a detailed justification in the application form. Preference is given to candidates up to 35 years of age. The decision on granting of a subsidy is taken by ISSP.
Selection of participants
ISSP has a limited number of places - we can host up to 60 participants in five workshops (12 per workshop) and around 12 for the Residency. The participants are selected based on their applications and submitted portfolios. The main selection criteria are the quality of work and motivation.
The evaluation of applications is performed by a panel of external experts - editors Paola Paleari (YET Magazine, CH), Katherine Oktober Matthews (GUP Magazine, NL), Lisa Premiyak (The Calvert Journal, UK) and Louise Clemens (director of Format Festival, UK).
The final decision on admissions and workshop allocation is taken by ISSP. When admitted, you will be offered a place at a specific workshop, based on the priorities expressed in the application.
In the unlikely case of cancellation of a workshop, the participants will be offered a place in a different workshop or fully reimbursed any payments made in advance. If the participants cancel participation from their side: in case the cancelation is done by 1 June - 50% of the advance fee will be be returned; in case the cancelation is done after 1 June, the advance payment will not be returned.
